What is driving you to make that next move? Is it the fear of getting fired or not being present in the workplace? Is it the desire to do good and be better? Whatever the tactic is that you choose to conquer your dreams, know we support it. There is nothing wrong with either side of that coin if it works for you.

So many of us make choices based off of fear, which often leads to things like guilt, shame, isolation or feeling stuck. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of not being apart of something bigger—it’s a common thread that runs through all of our lives. But there is a way that we can turn fear to serve us and allow it to bring value to our lives and our businesses.

But what’s the best way to adopt that mindset?

By breaking through that wall we’ve all been building (that’s how!). Every single one of us has the willpower to achieve the goals that have been scribbled on note pads for months. If we allow fear to no longer be a burden, but take form as a blessing—we are free. Fear, then, leaves all excuses we used to have at the door and welcomes action.

Our 5 best tips in taking control of fear and harnessing that power:

  1. Prioritize What It Is You Want

Imagine yourself old and grey, rocking back in forth with your best friend on one side and a beloved pet on the other. You’re both looking back on life and chatting about the moments that took your breath away and the opportunities you ceased JUST because you jumped. You took the risk and made certain goals a priority. How would your life be different if you didn’t? What are your regrets? What do you wish you had made more time for? Is the goal you are searching to complete specified as a “must” or a “should”? Let fear motivate and propel you towards your ultimate goal, heck, your ultimate life!

  2. Recognize Your Excuses

Excuses are easy to hide behind. They are like barricades blocking us from our dreams, and they can be comforting at times don’t get me wrong, but they hold us back. But by becoming more aware of your brain’s tendency of using excuses, you will be more accountable for your actions and better at dismissing them. Knock fear out of the way!

  3. Adopt A Growth Mindset

Most successful people foster a growth mindset. What is a growth mindset? Well, let me tell ya! Over 30 or so years ago, professor Carol S. Dweck noticed that her students reacted drastically different when dealing with fear. So, she took on the job of studying the behaviour of thousands of children and later coined the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset. In short, when people believe they can get smarter, they understand that it takes time, effort and energy. Therefore, as they place all of those mental and psychical ingredients into a mixing pot… poof! They are rewarded with “…a view that creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment…” (Dweck, 2015).

  4. Accept That Failure Is Inevitable

As human beings, we have to come to terms that we WILL fail. It’s part of the process. It’s part of life. Do you think Bill Gates willingly watched his first company crumble and allowed fear to destroy his dream of producing Microsoft? Heck to the no! What about Walt Disney? Did you know that one of the most creative geniuses of the 20th century was fired from a newspaper because he was told he lacked creativity? YEAH! DISNEY LACKED CREATIVITY. Did you know Steve Jobs was booted from his company or Stephen King’s iconic thriller Carrie received 30 rejections? Failure is one of the many stepping stones to success.

  5. Know You Are Ever-Evolving

There is not one person on this spinning rock that hasn’t had to overcome some sort of major obstacle. When you are given life, you are also handed consequence, but remember… we are built to adapt. We are built to feed, grow, crumble, wilt, reform and come back to life. Embrace fear as a strength, and use each experience as a tool to help you move (in whatever way that may be).

Here is a wild idea: What if we could be driven by fear AND desire?

What if fear becomes desire, or vice versa. It’s important to take both elements into account and understand they each have a purpose in your business and in your life. If you have a desire to own a business, but are afraid to do so… just JUMP. Ask questions, go to networking events, research, get a drink with a business owner, walk into a few shops and speak with one. This is YOUR life, and bypassing hardships will not get you anywhere sister. Follow what you LOVE, because that will lead you to where you need to be.
